Hello! Welcome to my Next to Normal shrine, or N2N for short!
Next to Normal is a Broadway American rock musical originally released in 2008. The book and lyrics were written by Brian Yorkey and the music was composed by Tom Kitt.
While it's existed almost as long I've been alive (scary), it got a huge revival in 2024! It's funny actually, I got into this musical like Right Before the revival started. Help. If you've heard of it recently, the PBS recording of that revival is likely why! The musical also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which is pretty cool!
N2N's story is all about the Goodman's, your average nuclear family. Except that Diana, the mother of the house, struggles with bipolar disorder. That obviously complicates things a little. The musical's core message is about grief but it also addresses topics like depression, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and the impact of the "nuclear family" image on everyday life.
Since the musical is explictly about these things, this shrine will talk about them. It's pretty unavoidable LOL.Oh, I'll also be spoiling the show in some of my rambles. So please, if you've never seen Next to Normal, do so RIGHT NOW!!! It's soooo worth it. I promise! I wouldn't make a whole shrine about it otherwise!
This musical means the world to me, to put some (hopefully) longer future rambles short, it was the light (haha) in my life during a very tumultous period of it. N2N's my favorite musical, and I hope w/ this little shrine you can see why :3
You're probably wondering, "but where can I actually like, watch the musical?". Well, there are a few different answers depending on what you're looking for.
First off, there are two main versions of the two most people watch, the original Broadway Cast ver. from 2009, and the 2024 Revival. There are of course, plenty more versions of the show out there (for example this korean production), but those are the main ones people reference the most.
Both versions of the show aren't too hard to find, in fact, PBS released a recording of the 2024 revival show. This means there is in fact a N2N proshot out there, YIPEE! You do have to donate to access it though at the moment it seems.
There are of course, "slime tutorials" if you know what I mean of both shows out there, however my secret THIRD option to solve the dillema of having to pick between the two is making my OWN OPTION!
Here's the link if the iframe breaks! The Alpine Theater Project on Youtube has their OWN production of the show, that is professionally produced and recorded! This is probably the best legal way to watch N2N, so if you don't wanna bounce around slime tutorials I highly reccommend watching this production.
I will go into detail about what I like/prefer about each production another time, but I'd say if you are completely new to N2N, the ATP production is a great way to start!
